Aging Graceful

Todays Poem was set to be published a little earlier, but a little family issue took preference. Thus all work on blog or Poetry had to take a back seat for a day or two.

Today’s poem begun with a term I have come to know here as “Aging gracefully”, any remaining words in that phrase did not matter for this poem. Yet We find a Poem where the Party in the poem (or narrator of this poem), is unhappy as it were with “Aging” and questions if the “Land of Youth” has forever gone from sight? In celtic mythology “The Land of Youth” was known as “Tír na nÓg” (Pronounced teer — nan –ohg) of which the english translation is “Land of Youth”. Tír na nÓg was said in fable to be a land where enernal youth washad by those there, But never could one step foot on this mortal soil again.

Thus the narrator in mourning as it were the loss of the days of youth. As hair of Gold (imagine what colour hair is closest there LoL) has been replaced by a crown of Silver or silver hair. Therefore this narrator is not happy with all that age has left them with. The seas of life has landed them on shores which is Old Age and does not like it nor is there a way back to where they came from.

About The Poem:

As we find ourselves with a poem that mourns the onset of older age and the loss of youthful days. It also brings me back to using a slight reference to Celtic Mythology (of which I believe such mythology makes us irish a part of who we are). Believing in mythology or not, it is important to kow or become in any slight way where such mythology exists within the core of a peoples. Therefore if religions does not permit such mythology, my advice is Give this one a skip. This is not to offend, But to follow paths where other Great Poets of Irish past, I aim to follow also with my pown slant on such myths.

As readers move through tis poem, they may find areas that does not make sense, I assure it does to me at least, Because some are hints of old quotes and sayings or social views on aging. Also on to the mention or reference to “The Land Of Youth” where as a child I learned it to be “The Land of Eternal Youth”. But adding such references to a topic of ageing and mourning youth, all makes perfect sense.

Having said all of this; Please enjoy This Poem:

Aging Graceful

As season slips into season,
Stains remaining for the reason.
Sailing seas into unknown shores,
We roam to mortalities doors.

Silent Shadows dancing back when,
Sun light breaks through storm clouds again.
These golden crowns in turn shiver,
Covered in a veil of silver.

Fables dubbed graceful ages well,
Aching bones will tell where we fell.
Return tickets void or destroyed,
Another reason to avoid.

As sprints become marathons here,
Shed no tear as none will appear.
Signposts ne’er decorate this land,
Take no stand, we’re stuck with this hand.

Where stands now the land of the youth?
Has it thus left for want of truth?
Oh “Land of Youth” where did you stray?
The seas we sail does not display.
