In Plain Sight

Introduction to In Plain Sight

How often do we look beyond what we have, searching for something better, something brighter, or something we believe will make life more complete?

We set ourselves goals, follow our ambitions, and spend years pursuing the things we hope will bring us happiness. Yet life has a way of offering its quieter gifts without drawing attention to them: a familiar chair, a cup of tea, the morning light falling across a room, or a gentle breeze through an open window.

These ordinary moments can be easy to overlook. We may be so occupied with where we want to go that we forget to notice where we are.

In Plain Sight grew from a reflection on these simple comforts and the peace they can bring. It is not a suggestion that we should abandon our dreams or stop striving for something more. Rather, it asks us to pause occasionally and consider whether some of what we seek has been beside us throughout our journey.

Sometimes, a little stillness is all we need to see what was there all along.

Steaming tea beside an open window

In Plain Sight

The kettle sings its quiet song,
no tune that travels far —
just a steady, warm old hum
that seems to say, “You’re home.”

Morning light spills through the glass,
nothing golden or grand —
just soft enough to touch the floor
and drift along the wall.

There sits the chair that knows my shape,
worn smooth by years of use —
it does not ask for anything,
just holds me while I rest.

The teacup that fits perfectly,
its rim a little worn —
It’s known my smiles, my quiet tears,
and shared the passing of the years.

A curtain moving in the breeze,
the faint, sweet, wild scent —
such simple things to notice,
a moment not to rush.

We search the world with hungry eyes
for things that shine from afar —
when what we need may rest beside us,
unnoticed where we are.

The tea still steams beside me now,
the window breathes the evening air —
I searched so long for what I sought,
and all along, it waited here.

King’s Quote:

“We search the world for what seems rare, and miss the treasures waiting there.”

Personal Notes:

We spend so much time over years, in search of something that makes us feel complete. For some it is a personal relationship with God and for others it is riches etc. But all too often that which makes it complete is what may have been with you on that journey in life. It may have been anything from an item to a close friend or companion, Even your search for God may have been before you all this time. Sometimes we need to stop for a few moments and look about us and at what helps to drive us. This is where that contentment may be found Or your journey begins. This poem was inspired by a simple quiet time with a steaming hot cup of herbal tea, with an opened window as a cool breeze blows in through. Feel free to let me know how you feel about this thought. I do not state that where you are at in life is right or wrong, But simply stating that soemtimes if we slow down enough we find what we missed all along.
