Erin’s Veil

Today’s Post has been heavy on my heart and mind for some time. BUT I need to stress, That todays poem IS NOT and WAS NOT written or composed for political reasons in Mind. Nor was it written to highlight a certain political aim in Mind. BUT It was composed to remember and to keep in mind (a) Celtic Pride is something that is big here in Ireland, (b) Most if NOT all wish to remember what happened in our history with great pride (especially the years from 1916 to 1922).

About The Poem:

Todays poem on one hand seeks to remember and honour those who fought then (the years listed above). BUT also SEEKS to STRESS that Celtic Mythology is something Important. Their stories and tales etc grow inside me still.

For anyone who visits this country what they see and take from the people they meet is only a little piece of what is Celtic herritage and lifestyle. In today’s poem, even in The Title, The Name Erin is mentioned. This is a nod to and an appreciation of what is my herritage and folklore. The Celtic Poeple are generally Suspicious minded and in fact are in all ways.

I want to highlight a couple of sides to Irish or Celtic herritage and celtic folklore. On one side it hints to Celtic FolkLore from their Goddesses , gods etc on to other great tales of folklore of which I believe to be important to knowning what true celtic beliefs are enveloped about , through and in. Rather than typing all this here I am adding a link to a Site that has some Irish FolkLore which I suggest reading on at your own ease, especially for this poem The Goddess Erin or as she was known as in old times The goddess Eriu. Because It is she that this land has been named after Eire or Eriu or more modern name Erin. For more on Irish FolkLore check this out .

Folks will also get more than a hnt of Rebellious or that said nature within this poem, This is because I believe many of us irish are rebellious in nature (well I certainly am and it comes with remembering the risks my grandfather made in his own delings between the years 1916 to 1922. Plus if for no other reasons the video I am linking here is from a movie about One of My heros , Michael Collins (again from that era listed above). Also it is a song sung by Sinead O’Connor “The Foggy Dew”. (Which also gives a little musical background for this poem)

Yet on another side this poem gives light to how great and beautiful this land is, also the music that is found within this land, Much of which I have grown to be very proud of. But I am also adding a link to another video here which also sets images in mind of this land I am certain of. For me it sets great pride in being from Ireland not of it’s leaders But of what it is to be Irish and its herritage, language and arts. This is a Piece of music on Uilleann Pipes (Uilleann meaning Elbow or Elbow Pipes ) A most beautiful sound and haunting music in this video So please check this one out Davy Spillane – Caoineadh Cu Chulainn Uilleann Pipes

As folks can gather there is so much in which to write on relating to todays poem. BUT I must stress again that this is NOT A POLITICAL nor a POLITICALLY MOTIVATED POEM But one that celebrates and highlights Ireland, it’s culture, Music and in the arts all within this poem, PLus gives credit in honour to those who gave for this land.

Having said all of this Please Check out the links I listed on this post in links etc. And Finally Enjoy This Poem:

Erin’s Veil

Beneath the sun kissed hills people still walk,
Or fields filled with corn stalks , they stand to talk.
In the distance they - fought and then bled,
But Erin ne’er did mourn but danced instead.

In the mist covered fields, no sun could shine,
On fields of emerald green, all divine.
Few would recline on what was mine but she,
As the sea kissed her garments green and plea.

Yet with naked pride - they fought and died,
Beneath skies that cried as they ne’er replied.
For Erin and love who could fit the glove,
Who with unrivalled beauty stood for love.

Some took to their own, possessions their fate
But great at the gate they stood, to await.
She their sovereign love, a light - thus strong,
They her children filled with pride sing her song.

Celtic Pride stands firm today we still say,
Come to survey what we display, one day.
Ne’er dare change this veil, that covers this land,
Together to stand there on Erin’s hand.

ENDING THOUGHTS:

Thank you for following me on this journey, that is incomposing and creating poetry. If Life is a journey which we all walk on, then my journey in creating Poetry is a journey of it’s own. Which I still learn much on as I write.

At times I experiment on methods or way how I can improve my poetry, therefore getting feedback is always most welcome for such as these.

When I write poetry, some readers may be offended with something within the poetry. I do not write to offend, But such are written for reasons I outline in the posts. Often I miss typos and mistakes when publishing each poem. BUT I correct the moment I discover such mistakes.

But Poetry is a form of art work that I enjoy and thus using it in a manner to touch or inspire the reader.

I would like to Pass on my thanks to you for joining me on this journey.

Poetry is a learning curve where I always strive to improve. Often due to the speed of my typing and a few other issues, mistakes and typos will find their way into published posts. I continue to work on improving this as I move along. One such change is how I have been writing and how my poetry appears in relation to how the rest of the blog appears. So much work goes into editing and reediting and then repeating that process on a number of occasions until i am happy with the result.

Please forgive for any such mistakes and for your understanding this.

  1. That Celtic pride travels to the US as does our history’s stories which have traveled down through my ancestors. My grandfather brought his family here on a “potato boat.” It was that or watch them all starve. Erin go bragh!

    1. Go raibh maith agat (Thank you) I grew up not interested in the native language (Irish) which I have been stuudying almost a year now and I am delighted that I took that step. I also believe that our celtic culture also including our language is in more danger now than it was during foreign rule. Thus My daughters and I study the language in order to speak it as regular as possible. I am delighetd that some of that culture has travelled with those who left on those awful ships. to escape a famine that was a result of rule by those who saw fit to watch Irish die in the name of what some called it “gods will” Thank you….
