Finding Inspiration for Poem Writing

My aim is to share a brief tip on creating a poem from seemingly nothing. This can be useful when the ability to compose a poem seems to have left you temporarily. Instead, I am sharing my five cents’ worth of views. These ideas can be used during such times or to explore creativity in poetry.

Creativity in Poetry:

When should one use creativity in poetry? In short and simple terms, anywhere, anytime. In my view, there are no limits to creativity. Using creativity in art has always gone hand in hand. For many years, I believe that creativity has been lost or left out of the process of composing a poem. Deciding to omit creativity limits the entire experience. My view is simple and clear. Do whatever it takes to catch a reader’s eye when reading your poem. This is a great step toward creating a compelling piece of art. Keeping it honest and real of course.

Adding descriptions to your poetry can enhance it, “just my personal opinion”. I often draw inspiration from reading works by some of the greats in poetry. I learn how they incorporated elements into their work as aids. I improve how I describe scenes. For example, where someone is seated or how a river flows through land. This further engages a reader’s imagination. It takes them on a journey. As poets, we guide them through images. A treeline sways in the wind, or water moves. All of this helps set the mood for a poem.

Where to Find Inspiration :

When you’re stuck in a rut, finding inspiration for a poem can seem like an empty place. This is especially true for me. I enjoy the entire process. I like the writing and rewriting as I work toward the finished piece. Inspiration is everywhere. Material for a poem can be right in front of you, waiting to be illuminated. It can be found in someone’s post or within a lyrical preface to a poem. For instance, after my last post, someone spotted a potential poem. It was in the preface I had written for the poem “Steadfast Light.” Thank You my friend.

STEADFAST LIGHT - PREFACE AS A POEM

There are loves
that arrive like lightning,
loud,
luminous,
and swiftly named.

And there are loves
that linger
like morning light,
unnoticed at first,
yet faithfully returning.

This is not a tale of roses
pressed between pages,
nor of grand gestures
set before watching eyes.

It is the remembrance,
of a love
that walked quietly
through ordinary days,
that chose steadiness
over spectacle
and built its brightness
not in a single moment
but in many.

I watched them pass
through seasons and years,
and learned
that the truest love
does not seek
to be seen.
It simply remains.

From Anywhere:

The inspiration that you seek is found anywhere, It is from a Word or Sentence that someone spoke. Or it comes from a Line that you read, Everything and anything is a potential poem. The challenge becomes , Taste, style etc. In my opinion I would suggest that, You be prepared to compose from a thought or Dream.

Everything goes in this world that is creativity, it comes down to your taste in the end at that point. If learning is your road in life, Which I walk in. Then try learning what is found and use what you learn to adapt into your poetic creation. I use anything and everything as a tool to learn from. At the end of the day, I create my own Poetry.

In finishing this Little post, I hope that even a little piece of this becomes useful for you. Be aware and be ready to create. Do not be afraid to experiment or adapting to create a poem. There are never failures in Poetry But Material in which to use for Poetry in the future. Most important of all if you enjoy Composing Poetry, have fun.

Thank you for following me on my little journey, that is composing or writing poetry. Life is a journey we all walk on. My journey in creating poetry is unique to me. Which I still learn much on as I write.

At times, I experiment with techniques to improve my poetry. So, feedback is always welcome for experiments like these.

When I write poetry, some readers will be offended with something within the poetry. I do not write to offend, But such are written for reasons I outline in the posts. Often I miss typos and mistakes when publishing each poem. I correct the moment I discover such mistakes.

  1. Wow, Pat!!! This is so totally Awesome!!! You have a masterpiece in this post!!!! THANK YOU so much for the mention on The Preface!!!
It was just me doing what you talked about in this post – noticing a glimmer in the words that wanted to be seen as a Poem and not just a Preface!! That Preface was so masterful!!! Thanks so much for letting me move it around! I so appreciate you seeing what I saw and using it in this post!!! Maybe in the near future you can give it a title of it’s own and share it as one of the poems you are proud of and are happy you did what you talked about in this post – You found a poem in your writing that you didn’t know was there!!! How cool is that????

Honestly, this post is something that is so insightful and meaningful and could have been easily written by one of the great master poets in history!!!!! BRAVO, PAT, BRAVO!!! I would really love for you to try and get this post published in a major paper or magazine. Truly, this would be something that you could do a guest speaker in a college or high school lit class. Actually, my next door neighbor is a high school English teacher, I would really love to pitch this to her if that is Okay with You??? Let me know about this? I think it would be something cool that you could try???

Really, this would have been something my High School English teacher would have given us as a reading assignment when we studied poetry!!! This would have inspired me to write poetry!!!!

I also loved the line that you included – “How a river flows through a land” – This was an awesome line and reminded me of the Poem by Sidney Lanier that I think I told you about “The Song Of The Chattahoochee” It tells exactly how a river flows and is a great poem. I will post the link here for you again to see if you think it does exactly what your line says!! Fantastic Post, Pat!!!

Here is the link to the poem – “The Song Of The Chattahoochee”

    1. Thank you agin Chuck. As I stated a few moments ago in another comment, I had just completed Rewroking much of this Post because some of it felt a little off, so I reworked it.. Thanks again Chuck for pointing that Poem out in that Preface.. It takes a good eye to spot that.

  2. Hey, Pat,

Why don’t you try recording yourself reading “The Song Of The Chattahoochee” out loud and slowly. This could be a great example of how Lanier did just what you said by showing – “How a river flows through a land” and how Lanier captured that and created a historic poem??? Just me thinking. I think you might like how your recording turns out????
